On March 4, 2026, the Government of Canada announced an extension of certain temporary immigration measures for Iranian nationals currently living and working in Canada.
These measures were originally introduced in February 2023 in response to the ongoing instability in Iran. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the updated policy is intended to continue supporting eligible Iranian nationals who are already contributing to Canadian communities and the Canadian labour market.
Who Is Eligible?
Iranian nationals may be eligible to apply for a work permit extension if they:
-
Are currently in Canada
-
Hold a valid Canadian work permit
-
Received their work permit on or before February 28, 2025
Eligible applicants can apply to extend their work permit under these special measures.
Validity of the Program
The special measures will remain in place until:
March 31, 2027
Applicants should note that:
-
Regular IRCC processing fees apply
-
Applications must be submitted before the current work permit expires
What About Visitors and Students?
At this time, there are no special measures for:
-
Visitor visa extensions
-
Study permit extensions
Individuals in these categories must apply through the standard IRCC immigration procedures.
Why These Measures Matter
The extension recognizes the ongoing uncertainty in Iran and allows Iranian nationals already working in Canada to maintain legal status and continue contributing to the Canadian economy.
